Constructed in the Soviet Union in 1978, Rustavi was renovated in 2012 and new facilities improved in 2017 to create a modern racing circuit in Georgia.
Originally popular with the national racing scene, by the late 1980s the track had begun to deteriorate, and after closing in 1989 the circuit sat decaying for over two decades.
The facility was purchased by Shota Abkhazava in 2009 and by 2011 redevelopment work had begun, including reconfiguring parts of the circuit, although the same basic layout remained.
With over $20 million invested, including new access tunnels and bridges, the circuit was awarded FIA Grade 2 certification, allowing a wide range of racing to be held.
The circuit’s status peaked in 2017 when it hosted the opening round of the TCR International Series to great success.
