The Autódromo José Carlos Pace, better known as Interlagos, is Brazil’s oldest racing circuit, situated in the city of Sau Paulo.

The land for the circuit was originally purchased in 1926 by property developers for housing, but following the start of the economic collapse and the Great Depression, the decision was taken to build a race track.

Construction commenced in 1938 and the circuit opened in 1940, with a lengthy 7.96 kilometre configuration.

A link was added in 1957 to create a fast outer circuit, but the circuit was still lacking in safety and facilities.

Extensive renovations began in 1970, resulting in the Brazilian Grand Prix being held at the venue from 1972. It hosted the race throughout the rest of the 70s, save for 1978 when Jacarepaguá stepped in, but drivers became increasingly concerned about safety – and the bumpiness of the track.

After losing the Grand Prix to Jacarepaguá for the 1980s, the circuit was extensively remodelled in 1990 to create the current-day 4.325 km layout, which brought F1 back.

The new variant used parts of the original layout but running in opposite directions, with new corners linking the parts of asphalt.

Over the following three decades various changes have been made to the pitlane entry and exit and the addition of an optional chicane in 1992 for bikes – but not used for Formula One. A more recent change to the chicane was permanently implemented in 2017, used by the national Stock Car series.
