Located in the city of Buriram, around 300 km to the north-east of Bangkok, the Buriram International Circuit, known as the ‘Chang International Circuit’ for sponsorship reasons, is a thoroughly modern motorsport venue.
The FIA Grade 1 circuit was built in 2013 – 2014 to a design by the renowned circuit designer Hermann Tilke. The project, driven by wealthy local politician Newin Chidchob, who also owns the nearby Buriram United football club, reportedly cost $45 million to complete.
Super GT was the first series to visit in 2014. In 2015, both the TCR International Series and FIA World Touring Car Championship attended in quick succession, with the latter taking advantage of the floodlighting built from the onset to stage a race at sundown.
Whilst TCR International returned in two subsequent years, the WTCC did not. Nonetheless, the 4.55 km track is a hugely popular MotoGP circuit since 2018, when a new pitlane entrance was also constructed for the bikes.
