The Gelleråsen Arena, located to the north of Karlskoga, is the oldest permanent motor racing circuit in Sweden.
Opening in 1952 as a short 1.6 kilometre circuit, the only corners unchanged since that original layout are the Hårnålen and Depåkurvan bends. In fact, the track had held its first races two years earlier on a gravel surface, but it was not until 1952 that asphalt was laid.
A significant extension was added in 1957 to take the length up to 3 km, including the daunting banked Velodromkurvan.
After holding a trio of non-championship Formula One races in the 1960s, over the next three decades the track focussed on sportscar and touring car racing, although the facilities grew increasingly tired.
Renovations eventually came in the 1990s, but this spelt the end of the Velodromkurvan extension by 1995, which instead turned into a kart circuit, with the main track shortened as a result.
In 2000 the pitlane was moved from the inside to the outside of the circuit. In 2006 the start-finish straight was shortened with the creation of a tightened first corner, increasing the available run-off.
The most recent change saw the final corner realigned in 2018 over what was the location of he old pitlane.
Multiple Swedish touring car champion Richard Göransson took ownership of the venue in March 2018 from previous owners Mike Luff and Lennart Bohlin, who had run the venue for the past 32 years.
