The ongoing coronavirus pandemic in Europe has resulted in the DTM releasing a revised ten-round 2020 calendar, which is provisionally set to get underway at the Norisring in July.
The DTM was one of the last remaining major touring car series yet to confirm the situation for its planned events in 2020. The first event of the year had been set to be at Zolder in Belgium on 24 – 26 April, although that event has now been postponed.
Instead the season should kick off at the Norisring street circuit in Nuremberg on 10 – 12 July, followed by an event at either Igora Drive in Russia or Anderstorp in Sweden on 31 July – 2 August.
All of the original venues remain on the rearranged calendar, with the season now set to conclude at Monza in Italy on 13 – 15 November.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Europe has played havoc with the global motorsport calendar, with many events now set to run their busiest-ever Autumn calendars.
“These are unprecedented and uncertain times – and our priority is the wellbeing of our families, our staff, and our community,” said ITR Managing Director Marcel Mohaupt.
“Despite the uncertainty, we felt it was important to provide motorsport fans worldwide – and everyone involved in DTM – with a revised calendar featuring new dates.
“Clearly, the safe containment and treatment of this epidemic is everyone’s first priority, but we believe that sport can play an important role in helping restore normality to people’s lives.
“With support from our fans, DTM’s manufacturers Audi and BMW – who will bring 16 cars to this year’s grid – the racetracks and all our partners, we all want to put together an exciting season later this year.
“We know we have to remain flexible and pragmatic – but this is a first step; and we will hold true on our promise to come back stronger. When it is safe to return to the racetrack, we want the DTM to help lead the way.”
The situation remains dynamic and further changes to the DTM’s 2020 calendar are possible depending on how the pandemic changes in Europe in the coming weeks.
