Kris Richard believes “driving smart” contributed to race one result

Target Competition’s Kris Richard says that “driving smart” helped him to progress in race one of TCR Europe at the Hungaroring.

The Swiss driver struggled in qualifying and could only manage 13th position on the grid, but finished in fifth after making up positions in race one.

He told TouringCars.Net he was happy with a good race, gaining positions from others having contact and racing intelligently.

“It was a really good race for me despite some contact with two or three drivers,” said Richard. “I had quite a good start, and then I was just driving smart and looking where the gaps where and taking them.

“Then I took a lot of profit from some crashes, and I tried to keep my rhythm lap by lap and see where the gaps are. I was waiting for what the others were doing and most of the time they were crashing so I gained positions.”

With conditions dry today [8 July] at the Hungaroring, the 2016 FIA European Touring Car champion is confident of the Hyundai i30 N’s pace at the twisty 2.722 mile circuit.

“When it’s dry we have one of the best cars. We saw it in free practice, we were very competitive and it would be perfect if it stays dry for the race.

“Then we can full attack and hopefully a top eight result should be possible.”
