Rob Huff pleased with ‘mega weekend’ in front of bumper crowd

Rob Huff was pleased to score a double podium in front of over 110,000 fans in the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) races in The Netherlands, moving the Brit up to third overall in the drivers’ standings.

Huff scored pole position in Sunday’s first qualifying session of the weekend, before going on to finish third after a slow start dropped him back at the beginning.

The reverse-grid second race saw Huff claim a top ten in eighth, having qualified in second and thus started from ninth for that race, before going on to hold his position in the final, high-scoring final race of the weekend on Monday to take second and his fifth podium of the season.

Huff followed Audi’s Jean-Karl Vernay over the line in the final race having been unable to take the challenge to the pole-sitter and Monday pace-setter.

“I got a slightly better start than JK but the Audi just stretched its legs a little bit into Turn 1,” said Huff. “He braked very early into Turn 1, very safe, so I gave him a little touch, but that was about as exciting as the race got.

“I’m really happy with a great weekend with lots of points. That’s all I’m aiming for; I’m not too worried about winning races, but to be regularly on and just off the podium and keep scoring points a little off the radar is good.”

Huff also praised the event organisers for the show for the fans, which saw not only the WTCR in action but also TCR Europe, the Dutch Supercar challenge, Porsche GT3 Cup racing and Formula 1 demo runs and Caravan races by Max Verstappen.

“We have to congratulate the organisers of the event. It’s been spectacular with so many people here.

“Obviously Tommy [Coronel] and everyone here in The Netherlands is working hard to make this event probably the most special WTCR event we’ve seen, and we’ll probably see for the future. It’s been amazing.”
