Tom Ingram continued to set the pace in second practice for the British Touring Car Championship at Rockingham, putting his Speedworks Toyota on top just under a tenth of a second ahead of Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff.
Ingram, who scored his maiden BTCC podium at the circuit two years ago, went to the top of the times with seven and a half minutes to go, pipping the Honda of Goff by just 0.088 seconds.
Times weren’t as quick as the morning’s earlier first practice session though, with Ingram lapping just under three tenths slower than his best lap of the day.
Goff had five minutes earlier put in the then-best time of the session, and he ended up as the second fastest driver after the final minutes of the session saw few improvements.
The two Team Dynamics factory-backed Hondas saw a significant improvement in form in the session, with title contender Gordon Shedden ending up in third just ahead of team-mate Matt Neal in fourth.
Shedden had earlier been the pace-setting driver at the mid-point of the session, with the Scot not improving his time thereafter.
Motorbase’s Mat Jackson was fifth quickest, ahead of Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat in sixth.
Ant Whorton-Eales continued to show impressive pace in second practice, once again putting his AmD Tuning Audi inside the top ten with the seventh best time.
Adam Morgan made it two Ciceley Mercedes in the top third with eighth, ahead of the Subaru duo of Jason Plato and Josh Price, who completed the top ten.
The two title-contending factory-backed BMWs of Rob Collard and Colin Turkington struggled for pace in the session, although this time around it was Collard who was the best of the pair in 12th. Turkington, carrying the maximum 75 kg of success ballast, ended the session in 20th, just behind the Pirtek-backed BMW of Andrew Jordan.
The session featured a brief red-flag stoppage after ten minutes when Stewart Lines came to a halt on the circuit at the exit of Chapman Curve. The session resumed after a few minutes, but Lines took no further part.
Qualifying takes place at 15:30 BST.
