Team BMW’s Colin Turkington revelled in a double win in the British Touring Car Championship races at Brands Hatch, which leaves him just two points off the top of the drivers’ standings.
Turkington was on fine form all weekend, scoring a 28th career BTCC pole position on Saturday before winning the opening two races in Kent on Sunday.
Unchallenged on his way to victory, the four-time BTCC champion scored a brace of lights-to-flag wins to take his win tally up to 69 in the championship.
Turkington then followed up with a drive from 11th to eighth in the final race of the day, despite lacking hybrid and running the medium compound tyre.
The 42-year-old has now moved up to second overall in the drivers’ standings, two points shy of NAPA Racing’s Ash Sutton, who has yet to finish off the podium in 2024.
Indeed, such is Turkington’s strong start to the year, it is now his second-best performance in the opening six races of his 20-year BTCC career, with only 2020 yielding a slightly higher haul after the opening half dozen races.
“It’s been an amazing day,” said Turkington. “Two wins doesn’t come along too often, especially with the BTCC as competitive as it is.
“All credit to Team BMW because my car was epic all weekend from qualifying and through the three races.
“Even the eighth place in race three was good and I leave here as the top scorer.
“Second place in the championship sounds really good, but already you look towards Snetterton and know how hard it’s going to be to have less hybrid use through qualifying and race one.
“For now, I’m going to celebrate with the team and just enjoy what’s been a fantastic weekend.”
WSR Team Principal Dick Bennetts was pleased with the raw speed demonstrated by his team’s trio of BMW 3 Series racers.
“It’s been a great day at Brands Hatch,” added Bennetts. “For Colin to win twice and go from fourth to second in the points and for Adam [Morgan] in race two to go from 15th to fourth showed good speed from the BMW.”
