WSR has confirmed that it will run just three cars in this weekend’s British Touring Car Championship season opener at Donington Park, as ‘discussions remain ongoing’ about filling the seat for the next event onwards.
The 16-time title winners will field two cars for Colin Turkington and Adam Morgan under the Team BMW entry and an additional BMW 330e M Sport for Jake Hill as ‘Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport’.
Bobby Thompson had taken part in one of the official pre-season tests with the team at Brands Hatch as part of plans to secure a drive, but at present there has not been enough progress for the team to run the fourth car in the Donington season-opener.
It means this weekend’s BTCC grid will feature 20 cars, a reduction of seven from the 2023 season.
The team also undertook pre-season testing at Croft, Donington Park and a private test at Pembrey, as it plans to challenge for the title in the upgraded BMW 330e M Sport sporting the latest LCI upgrades.
“The new season is here and, as always, we’re aiming high and want to make BMW the first ten-time Manufacturers’ champions,” said Team Principal Dick Bennetts.
“It’s been a very busy winter at WSR as we’ve gone over almost every part of our BMW race cars with a new engine, produced in the UK for the first time, changes to the bodywork, cooling and under the skin.
“We’re pleased with the progress in testing, but we won’t know where we are until we arrive at Donington and see everyone’s true performance levels.”
