Colin Turkington endures ‘difficult’ end to the season

BMW’s Colin Turkington endured a difficult end to his British Touring Car Championship season at Brands Hatch, as contact from Dan Cammish in race two effectively ended BMW’s hopes in the manufacturers’ title.

Turkington had qualified in seventh on Saturday, and gained three places in a strong middle stint of the race, having been part of a four-car scrap for fourth.

The Northern Irishman only made it two corners into race two when contact from NAPA Racing’s Cammish at Druids broke his right-rear suspension, forcing Turkington into just his third retirement of the season.

Forced to start from the back for race three, the four-time champion then found himself without any hybrid for his recovery drive and could only manage tenth, as BMW lost out on the Manufacturers’ championship by just four points to Alliance Racing and Ford.

“It’s been a difficult end to the season,” said Turkington. “We had loads of potential with the BMW, as we saw from the strong fourth place in race one, but getting taken out on the first lap of race two ended our hopes, not just today, but in the Manufacturers’ Championship too.

“The BMW felt good in race three, but I lost hybrid on the formation lap so that limited what was possible. There’ve been a few too many ups and downs today and that’s been the way all season really.”

It is the second successive season in which Turkington has ended the year fourth overall, although it also means that he has never finished lower than fourth in the past ten seasons in the BTCC.

“Brands was reflective of the season as a whole to be honest. We’ve chased the car to get it how I like it a lot of the time, [but] been forced on the back foot and had to fight back.

“It’s been a strange year because of this, but I’m still satisfied I put everything into it.

“A massive thank you to Adam and Tom, my mechanics, who moved mountains time and time again for me this year.  Thanks to everyone at BMW, to all my incredible supporters and of course to the fabulous WSR #4 crew.”
