NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton took the top honours in the final British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Snetterton, seeing off an early challenge from Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom.
Although Sutton had been drawn onto pole position for the partially reversed grid race after the top nine in race two were reversed, it was fellow front-row starter Rowbottom who got the jump on the run to the first corner.
However, Sutton then fought back into the lead with an undercut on Rowbottom from Agostini bend to Hamilton corner, ending the lap firmly back in the lead against Rowbottom, who like team-mate Gordon Shedden reportedly had no hybrid boost available at all during the race due to a technical issue.
BTC Racing’s Jason Plato, who had started third, then followed Sutton past Rowbottom at Williams going onto the back straight, but he thereafter lacked the pace of his former team-mate and fell back over the course of the next 12 uninterrupted laps.
Sutton would go on to win by almost five seconds from Plato, with Toyota’s Ricky Collard completing the podium in his first visit to the rostrum this season, despite a last-lap pass from Excelr8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram.
Ingram had pulled a cutback move at Agostini to briefly pass Collard, but the Toyota racer came back at Williams with some contact, elbowing Ingram out wide.
Ingram took the chequered flag in fourth, whilst Jake Hill was the top BMW driver in fifth after breezing past Rowbottom on the Bentley Straight three laps from the finish.
Race one and two winner Colin Turkington followed Hill past on the approach to the Esses to take sixth, the Team BMW driver having just a few corners earlier dispatched Rowbottom himself.
Toyota’s Rory Butcher was seventh, along with Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan getting by Rowbottom on the penultimate lap, with Morgan taking eighth.
Rowbottom lost another place on the final lap, leaving Apec Racing’s Ollie Jackson to take ninth whilst Rowbottom completed the top ten.
BTC Racing’s josh Cook made a place at the start, passed Excelr8’s Daniel Lloyd for 13th a lap later then gained two more places in the following laps to take 11th when BMW’s Stephen Jelley was spun by butcher at the Esses and Power Maxed Racing’s Ash Hand retired to the pits.
Lloyd came home in 12th, ahead of Ciceley’s George Gamble, Team HARD’s Bobby Thompson and Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden, the latter gaining 12 places after starting at the back following his race two retirement.
In the championship, Turkington continues to lead with 282 points ahead of Ingram (265), Hill (258), Sutton (257) and Cook (210).
