Hyundai’s Mikel Azcona extended his lead at the top of the FIA World Touring Car Cup standings after claiming victory in the reverse-grid race in Aragón, after team-mate Norbert Michelisz crashed out on the opening lap.
At the start, Cyan Racing’s Ma Qing Hua held his pole position into the first corner, but Michelisz, who had started from second, moved alongside around the outside at Turn 2, with contact as Michelisz sought to avoid a tyre stack on the outside.
The dramas intensified a few corners later as Michelisz went wide and hit a tyre stack, and as he coasted back onto the circuit he was collected hard by Tom Coronel’s unsighted Audi, which had been running at the tail of the field.
Coronel was out of the race immediately, ripping the front-right wheel off his car, requiring a two-lap safety car period to clean up the mess.
By this stage, Zengő Motorsport’s Dániel Nagy, who started from fourth, had battled his way into second behind Ma, whilst Azcona sat third.
Racing resumed on lap four and Nagy attacked Ma at the first corner to take the lead, with Azcona following into second a few corners later.
On lap five, Azcona pressured Nagy into running wide, giving the Spaniard the lead which he would hold for the remainder of the race, securing his third win of the season in the process.
Nagy didn’t settle into second as on the same lap he lost the lead his team-mate rob Huff moved into third, and the two swapped places a lap later.
Unlike race one, Huff didn’t have the pace to keep with the leader and he settled into second – giving the CUPRA driver a third consecutive second-place finish.
Cyan’s Santiago Urrutia was third, the Uruguayan having passed Nagy the lap after the two Zengő cars swapped places.
Despite that, Nagy held on to take fourth, giving him not only his best result of the year but also Zengő Motorsport’s best team result of the season.
Yann Ehrlacher was fifth, the reigning champion coming through past uncle Yvan Muller on lap five when he allowed the duo through.
Ma also let Ehrlacher through on lap eight, the Chinese driver eventually taking the flag in sixth, ahead of Muller in seventh.
Nathanaël Berthon was the best-ranked Audi driver in eighth, getting by Comtoyou Racing team-mate Mehdi Bennani on the final lap, with the Moroccan taking ninth.
Race one winner Gilles Magnus took tenth after he too gained a place on the last lap at the expense of Cyan’s Thed Björk.
Honda’s poor form continued, with all four of the Civics propping up the order, 12th-placed Esteban Guerrieri being the best-ranked of the quartet.
