W2 Pro GP’s Alceu Feldmann doubled up in the TCR South America races in Goiânia in Brazil, coming from tenth in the reverse-grid race to deny PMO Racing’s Juan Manuel Casella a win.
The second race of the weekend should have seen Scuderia Chiarelli’s Edson Reis start from the reverse-grid pole position, but the Brazilian didn’t make the start, effectively leaving Cobra Racing’s Bia Figueiredo on pole.
At the start, Figueiredo was beaten away by Pedro Aizza’s Hyundai Elantra and Casella, with the latter taking the lead into the first corner.
José Manuel Sapag, from sixth on the grid, also made a strong start, but his PMO Motorsport team-mate Marcio Basso bogged down after appearing to initially jump the lights, dropping to ninth.
On lap three, with Casella having opened up a 1.5 second advantage over Aizza, the latter’s race unravelled when he, along with Basso, was handed a drive-through penalty for a false start.
When Aizza had served his penalty he emerged down in 13th, leaving Casella ahead of Sapag at the front of the field.
Feldmann, meanwhile, continued to make progress. The Brazilian CUPRA driver was up to eighth on the opening lap, before gaining a place on Juan Ángel Rosso’s Honda on the second lap.
He then went toe-to-tow with team-mate Raphael Reis on lap four for fifth, which became fourth after Aizza’s penalty.
A lap later, he fought past the Lynk & Co of championship leader Fabricio Pezzini for third, and quickly closed in on Sapag for second.
Gaining the place on lap eight, it then took seven laps for Feldmann to close in on leader Casella, but on the penultimate lap of the race he took the lead with a fine move around the outside of the Peugeot, eventually going on to win by just over a second as Casella’s race faded.
Casella was nonetheless able to take second, his best result in the series, with Pezzini completing the podium after he passed team-mate Sapag for the place with slight contact on lap ten.
Sapag took fourth – the third race in a row he just missed out on the podium – ahead of Rosso in fifth, the Argentine having also got past Reis before the halfway stage.
Reis was sixth, ahead of Figueiredo in seventh, the latter unable to regain any significant ground after her poor start.
The top ten was completed by Franco Farina’s Peugeot, Renato Braga’s Honda and Aizza’s Hyundai in tenth.
Pezzini maintains his lead in the drivers’ standings with 223 points, 23 ahead of Reis, followed by Sapag (167), Rosso (153) and Aizza (118).
The next TCR South America round takes place at Rivera in Uruguay on 16 – 17 July.
