Josh Cook withstands heavy pressure to double up in race two

Josh Cook secured a second straight victory in the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch, winning ahead of NAPA Racing’s Dan Cammish after Jake Hill spun out of second on the penultimate lap.

Cook held onto first at the start, whilst behind him the BMW of Hill shot into second, as both he and Toyota’s Rory Butcher made strong getaways from the lights to slot into second and third.

Hill then followed Cook for most of the race, keeping the leading BTC Racing Honda driver in a defensive mode for the duration of the race.

On the penultimate lap, Hill again tried to find a way past Cook at Druids but he lost the rear of his BMW and spun, dropping to sixth.

That allowed Cammish into second, the Motorbase driver having again enjoyed strong late-race pace in his Ford Focus to come back from sixth on the opening lap to second, narrowly missing out on victory after running close to Cook on the last lap.

Butcher completed the podium, the Scot made a move on Hill for second at Paddock Hill Bend on the sixth tour, but then losing out at the following two corners to both the MB Motorsport driver and Cammish.

The Scot then ran in fourth for much of the race, until Hill’s spin promoted him into the final podium place.

Reigning champion Ash Sutton brought his Ford home in fourth, having like Cammish enjoyed strong late-race pace that saw him progress from a low of 11th early on.

Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden picked up another consistent points score in sixth, ahead of Hill in seventh, who lost out to the Honda driver on the final lap.

Behind Hill was the best Excelr8 Hyundai of Daniel Lloyd in eighth, with Ciceley Motorsport’s George Gamble and Team BMW’s Colin Turkington completing the top ten, the latter having slipped down the order in the opening laps before having to fight to hold position for the remainder of the race.

Bobby Thompson was once again the best Team HARD driver in 11th, whilst Excelr8’s Tom Chilton was 12th. Chilton has been randomly drawn to start the partially reversed-grid race three from pole position.

An early incident eliminated Power Maxed Racing’s Ash Hand and team-mate Michael Crees on the opening lap. Contact in the mid-pack sent the two Vauxhalls of Hand and Crees into each other, resulting in Crees bouncing into the barriers on the outside of Paddock Hill bend.

Crees continued, but only until lap seven. Also out on the opening lap were Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom and Laser Tools Racing’s Dexter Patterson.

Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan should have started from sixth on the grid but failed to take the start due to a gearbox issue on his BMW.

Race three is scheduled to get underway at 16:15 BST.
