Thruxton expert Josh Cook set the fastest lap in the first British Touring Car Championship practice session at Thruxton, edging out BTC Racing team-mate Jason Plato.
The early pace in the 40-minute session had been set by Team HARD’s Bobby Thompson, settling on a time of 1 minute 16.663 seconds, but the Ciceley Motorsport BMWs of George Gamble and Adam Morgan then took over at the top of the times just under ten minutes’ later.
Just after 15 minutes in, Plato hit the top of the times with an effort of 1:15.573, but his lap stood for less than five minutes as the benchmark, as local expert Cook went quickest of all with a 1:15.462 which stood for the remainder of the session.
Plato’s time remained otherwise unbeaten, leaving him in second, 0.11 seconds behind his team-mate.
MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill was the leading BMW driver in third, ahead of the NAPA Racing UK Ford Focus of Ashley Sutton in fourth.
Team BMW’s Colin Turkington was fifth fastest, ahead of the second Motorbase-run NAPA car of Dan Cammish in sixth.
Excelr8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram left it until the final ten minutes to post a competitive time, the Hyundai driver ending up in seventh, 0.825 seconds from Cook, ahead of Ciceley’s Morgan in eighth with the time that had earlier put him fastest.
The top ten was completed by Toyota’s Rory Butcher and Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley, the latter just over a second off the pace.
Second practice gets underway at 12:20 BST.
