Gordon Shedden fights past Tom Ingram to secure race two victory

Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden fought past Excelr8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram to claim victory in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park.

Prior to the start, Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley had to be pushed off the circuit on the warmup lap after his car appeared to break a prop shaft, leaving him without drive and out of the race.

Race one winner Ingram led away from the start, as his closest rival, Team BMW’s Colin Turkington stalled on the grid and dropped to the very back of the pack.

It briefly meant that all three of the West Surrey Racing BMWs were outside of the points, although Hill had made up eight places from his starting grid position on the opening lap alone.

Ciceley Motorsport’s George Gamble was one of the fastest away from the line, and he jumped from sixth on the grid to third at the start, before claiming second through the Craner Curves past Shedden.

Shedden then seized second from Gamble’s BMW on lap four, utilising his hybrid system along the start-finish straight into the first corner to secure the position.

By this stage, Ingram had opened up a one-second advantage, but over the next five laps Shedden cut the gap to just two tenths and was all over the back of the leading Hyundai.

Shedden made his move for the lead on the run up to McLeans on lap ten, having got a better run out of the old hairpin than Ingram, who had endured a twitch on the entry to the corner.

The two went side-by-side up the hill, both utilising their hybrid boost, with Shedden emerging in the lead as Gamble closed in in third.

Despite keeping close to the Honda for the remaining seven laps, Ingram couldn’t re-take the lead, and Shedden claimed his 51st win in the championship by a margin of just 0.197 seconds from Ingram.

In only his second BTCC race, Gamble completed the podium after a mature drive which saw him finish one place on the road ahead of Adam Morgan in fourth.

Morgan was reportedly running without any hybrid boost, making his fastest lap time an impressive effort of just two tenths slower than the ultimate best.

BTC Racing’s Josh Cook was fifth, having made further gains after a weekend which has been stymied since he damaged his car in practice.

The sole NAPA Racing UK car to finish on the lead lap was Ash Sutton in sixth, the reigning champion having dropped back to fifth early on in the race and failed to find the pace to press forwards thereafter.

Sutton’s team-mate Dan Cammish was running as high as 12th before he dropped back on lap 14 and ultimately pitted with a tyre delamination.

Bobby Thompson was an impressive seventh in the leading Team HARD CUPRA, ahead of Excelr8’s second prospect of Daniel Lloyd in eighth.

Having started at the back following his race one exclusion, MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill took the flag in ninth, having gained 19 places in the race.

Hill has also been drawn onto pole position for the partially reversed grid final race of the day, giving him the chance to again show his pace and end the weekend in style.

Toyota’s Rory Butcher completed the top ten, having largely moved with Hill through the field from the back.

Árón Taylor-Smith was running in ninth but threw away two places in one go late in the race when he slid at McLeans, allowing Hill and Butcher through. The Irishman took the finish in 11th, just ahead of Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom in 12th.

Following his puncture in race one, Jason Plato recovered seven places to claim 13th, whilst Turkington was only 14th after his stall at the beginning.

Several drivers failed to finish, with Ricky Collard pitting with further technical issues after eight laps, whilst ollie Jackson stopped by the side of the track on the same lap.

After alternator issues in race one, Excelr8’s Jack Butel again failed to finish and retired to the pits on lap five.

Race three is scheduled to get underway at 17:25 BST.
