Discovery Sports Events, promoter of the FIA World Touring Car Cup, has issued a statement confirming that the WTCR Race of Russia, due to be held in Sochi in September, cannot now take place.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Wednesday, the fate of the Race of Russia, due to be held for the second time after first appearing on the calendar last year, was uncertain.
Discvery Sports Events has now released a short statement in relation to the event:
“In view of the tremendously sad and troubling events in Ukraine, Discovery Sports Events, promoter of the WTCR − FIA World Touring Car Cup, confirms that in the current circumstances it is not possible to hold WTCR Race of Russia, scheduled as rounds 13 and 14 of the 2022 season.
“The thoughts of the entire WTCR family are with all those suffering as a result of events in Ukraine.”
No further information was provided about a possible replacement round at this stage.
