Rory Butcher secures first BTCC win of the season for Toyota Gazoo Racing UK

Rory Butcher has taken victory in the second British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Oulton park, securing the first win for Toyota Gazoo Racing UK this season.

Just as in race one, Dan Rowbottom got the better start between himself and team-mate Gordon Shedden to lead by the first corner. However, both Adam Morgan and Butcher were even quicker off the line, with the latter ending up on the inside of the two leading Hondas upon entry into the turn four hairpin.

Slight contact from Butcher caused Rowbottom to run into Shedden and push him wide, resulting in the Scot dropping down to fifth while his compatriot in the Toyota squeezed through to take the lead.

Onto lap two, the battling in the midfield was fraught. Plenty of body panels were shed as Ollie Jackson and Jack Goff were spat off of the circuit at the exit of the hairpin, after Goff got collected by Jackson’s spinning Ford. Then, a lap later, the battle-scarred Honda of Josh Cook made heavy side-to-side contact with Jason Plato’s Vauxhall after Plato had been punted from behind by Sam Osborne at the same corner.

Meanwhile, Ashley Sutton’s charge up the order after a disastrous race one had seen him climb up into eighth place by the halfway stage. Tom Ingram and Colin Turkington were also on recovery drives, with Ingram setting the fastest lap of the race in eleventh.

Not finished there, Sutton reeled in the BMW of Stephen Jelley as the pair of them closed in on Aiden Moffat who was being held up by Shedden. Further back, Ingram progressed into the top ten after getting the better of Sutton’s team-mate Carl Boardley.

Moffat then had enough of waiting behind Shedden, and on lap nine managed to hang on around the outside of Cascades to then gain the inside line for the turn four hairpin. With that, the Laser Tools Racing driver was up into the top five.

A lap later, Sutton took to the outside of Jelley at the hairpin, but couldn’t quite pull the move off. Not one to give up easily though, he finally pulled off the overtake for seventh place at the chicane through turns seven and eight. However, the BMW driver was back ahead by Lodge Corner.

Out in front though, Rory Butcher took his and Toyota Gazoo Racing UK’s first race victory of the season, with what was eventually a comfortable gap back to Rowbottom and Morgan in second and third.

Jake Hill had another quietly successful race in fourth, having just about managed to keep the Infiniti of Moffat at bay in the latter stages of this race.

Shedden brought his Honda home in sixth place despite being the cork in the bottle, while Jelley fought back to reclaim seventh from championship leader Sutton.

Senna Proctor wound up as the single car between Sutton and title rival Ingram, as the race one polesitter finished ninth for the second time today.

Boardley once again matched his personal best race result in eleventh, just ahead of Turkington and Tom Chilton in their pair of BMWs. Chris Smiley crossed the line in fourteenth, while the final championship point went the way of Osborne.

With that, Sutton remains in the lead of the championship standings, albeit just six points ahead of Ingram. Rowbottom, meanwhile, now finds himself in third.

There has been plenty of schedule delays today thanks to various incidents at Oulton Park, however the reversed grid third race of the afternoon remains set to get underway at around 17:00 BST.
