Championship leader Nico Müller continued to top the DTM times in second practice at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz, where he headed Audi team-mate Robin Frijns by just 0.015 seconds.
Müller hit the top of the timesheets after just seven minutes, with a lap of 1 minute 37.104 seconds, before team-mate Frijns edged him out with a lap of 1 minute 36.919 seconds.
However Müller was already on a quicker lap and posted a time of 1:36.904 to reclaim the top spot after eight minutes, with the Swiss remaining fastest thereafter.
Frijns – who has the best qualifying record so far this year – ended up in second with his effort, ahead of BMW’s Sheldon van der Linde in third, the South African being over four tenths off the pace.
Jamie Green once again put in times close to the top and was fourth, the Brit being just under half a second slower than his Audi stablemates.
Austrian BMW duo Lucas Auer and Philipp Eng were fifth and sixth quickest respectively, ahead of Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller and René Rast in seventh and eighth, the latter being 0.671 seconds off the pace.
BMW’s Jonathan Aberdein and Timo Glock completed the top ten, which featured a 50:50 split between the two manufacturers for the first time in 2020.
The session was notably closer than first practice, with the field covered by just under 1.3 seconds. The only drivers more than a second off the pace were Robert Kubica, Loïc Duval, who lost some running with issues on his Audi RS5, Ferdinand von Habsburg and Fabio Scherer.
Qualifying for race one is scheduled to get underway at 10:45 CEST (09:45 BST) on Saturday.
