Team WRT’s Santiago Urrutia put in a late effort to top the opening TCR Europe practice session at Oschersleben, heading the Honda duo of Tom Coronel and Dan Lloyd.
The Uruguayan racer set a time of 1:31.681 in the final two minutes of the session to edge out Bousten Ginion Racing’s Coronel and Brutal Fish Racing’s Dan Lloyd, who had also displayed strong pace in the final third of the half-hour session.
Erstwhile session leader Nelson Panciatici was the fastest Hyundai entrant, with Red Bull Ring race two winner Luca Engstler completing the top five, albeit six-and-a-half tenths adrift of Urrutia’s benchmark.
Target Competition’s Andreas Bäckman led the early stages of first practice in his Hyundai along with Gianni Morbidelli, who tasted success here in TCR International in 2017 but would end this session 7th.
Davit Kajaia’s CUPRA was next in eighth position, continuing his strong form from the Red Bull Ring last time out but eventually being forced to end his session prematurely with damage to the front-right corner of his car.
In ninth position was Zsolt Szabó, who replaced Dániel Nagy at the M1RA squad, enjoying a positive start to life with the Hungarian outfit.
Another Hyundai completed the top ten in the form of Jessica Bäckman, with Red Bull Ring podium finisher Alex Morgan in 11th ahead of Luca Filippi.
Next was Maxime Potty ahead of Aurélien Comte in the fastest of the Peugeots, while Dušan Borkovic’s replacement Dominik Baumann was 15th.
Notably, championship leader Josh Files did not set a representative time in 17th, almost two seconds off the pace.
