Team Toyota GB’s Tom Ingram secured the first victory for the new-for-2019 Toyota Corolla in the final British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park.
The 2018 runner-up started from reverse-grid pole on the favourable softer rubber, and led from lights-to-flag to score his first victory as a manufacturer-backed driver in front of some 4,500 Toyota representatives.
He headed a medium-tyre shod top three with Power Maxed Racing’s Rob Collard securing his first podium in the Vauxhall Astra ahead of erstwhile championship leader Josh Cook, who recovered his weekend well after a disastrous race one.
With more drama at the Old Hairpin on the opening lap, a safety car was necessitated after both Team HARD VWs of Carl Boardley and Michael Crees lost the rear through the Craner Curves and ended up in the barriers.
Their stablemate Jack Goff also suffered drama after being forced onto the grass and being collected in an unfortunate incident with Nic Hamilton at the Old Hairpin.
Ingram nailed the restart while Jake Hill slipped back, eventually losing out to Rory Butcher as the best of the hard tyre runners, with the Brands Hatch winner coming home fourth in his AmD Tuning FK2 Honda Civic.
New championship leader Ash Sutton consolidated his double podium with fifth position in the final race at the Leicestershire circuit, ahead of Hill who displayed a brilliant defensive drive to hold onto sixth position.
Double BTCC champion Jason Plato secured another top ten, ahead of Adam Morgan made late progress on the medium tyre, rewarding his Ciceley Motorsport team after their hard work to replace the front end of the Mercedes after heavy race one damage.
Double winner Colin Turkington capped off his day with ninth, advancing to third in the standings after a hugely successful day in his BMW 3 Series, with Halfords Yuasa Racing’s Dan Cammish completing the top ten in the third contest.
Chris Smiley recovered well in his BTC Racing FK8 Honda Civic Type R after a DNF in race two with broken suspension to finish 11th, passing Motorbase’s Tom Chilton in the closing stages of the race.
Race one podium finisher Tom Oliphant was next, a couple of seconds clear of Aiden Moffat’s Mercedes A-Class, with Sam Tordoff securing the final points-paying position in 15th.
Matt Neal, who finished second in race two, struggled in the final race to finish 18th.
