Motorbase Performance’s Sam Tordoff took victory in race one of the British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone, after holding off race-long pressure from Tom Chilton.
Team BMW’s Ricky Collard secured an impressive podium in only his third weekend of the BTCC, after he inherited third position as teammate Andrew Jordan’s Pirtek BMW slowed at Luffield on lap 12.
Collard got off to a fast start from the front row but Tordoff managed to come across on the run into Copse on lap one, forcing Collard wide and the 22-year-old dropped to fifth before progressing to the podium later on.
On lap four HMS Racing’s Rob Austin was speared across the inside at Becketts, collecting the unsuspecting Honda of Matt Neal and necessitating a safety car.
Tordoff nailed the restart on lap seven, and built a gap between him and fellow Motorbase racer Chilton.
Midway through the race that gap reduced and Chilton piled on the pressure, with no team orders meaning both Ford Focus RS’ were free to race.
Chilton came closest on the final corner of the final lap, but ultimately Tordoff held on to become the record-breaking 15th different winner of the season, with Collard joining the pair on the podium.
Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff came home fourth after defending from Matt Simpson’s fellow Honda Civic Type R in the final laps, ahead of Adam Morgan in sixth.
Team HARD’s Mike Bushell progressed from 15th on the grid to seventh, ahead of championship leader Colin Turkington who gained ten places from his grid slot in the second-best BMW.
In ninth position was the Cicley Motorsport Mercedes of Tom Oliphant who continued his form at the 1.6-mile national layout, with Dan Cammish rounding out the top ten in his Halfords Yuasa Racing Honda.
Reigning champion Ash Sutton also made significant progress from 25th through to 11th in his Subaru, while Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram scored one point in 15th on the harder Dunlop option tyre.
Race two gets underway at 14:40 BST (15:40 CEST).
