Adam Morgan has claimed his maiden pole position in the British Touring Car Championship at Rockingham after denying Sam Tordoff with a late effort.
The Ciceley Motorsport racer put in a late effort of 1:22.835 seconds around the 1.94 mile circuit in the Mercedes A-Class, edging out Tordoff’s Ford Focus RS by 0.102s.
Dan Cammish translated his pace in second free practice into a second row grid slot with third in the Honda Civic Type R, with a speechless Mike Bushell a surprise fourth for Team HARD in the Volkswagen CC alongside.
Croft race winner Dan Lloyd leads BTC Norlin Racing’s charge in fifth ahead – making it five different marques in the top five positions – with team mate Chris Smiley alongside.
Tom Chilton could make up crucial ground in the standings from seventh with the majority of his fellow contenders behind and has Brett Smith for company on the fourth row.
Team BMR put in an improved showing with their Subaru Levorg pairing; Jason Plato out-qualifying Ash Sutton on this occasion as the pair line up ninth and tenth respectively.
Andrew Jordan and Colin Turkington will both be sure-fire contenders later in the weekend after losing success ballast and start from the sixth row.
For Turkington, the significance is starting ahead of championship leader Tom Ingram as the Northern Irishman looks to close the points gap.
Sam Smelt put in his best-yet showing of 16th for AmD, whilst a host of regular suspects behind struggled for pace.
Power Maxed Racing’s Josh Cook could only muster 21st, Jack Goff 23rd and ‘Diamond Double’ race winner Matt Neal 29th.
Newcomer Ricky Collard did well given his 45 kilograms of ballast for entering the series late, and will start 26th in place of his father Rob.
The opening race of the weekend gets underway at 11:35 BST tomorrow.
