Tom Ingram headed the time sheets in the Speedworks Motorsport-run Toyota Avensis during the opening British Touring Car Championship practice session at Croft.
The reigning Independents Champion posted a quickest time of 1:24.600 seconds on his final run around the 2.1 mile Yorkshire circuit, edging out the HMS Racing Alfa Romeo Giulietta of Rob Austin by seven hundredths of a second.
Team BMR enjoyed their best showing of the season to date, with Ash Sutton and Jason Plato third and fourth respectively in the Subaru Levorg GTs.
An electrical issue had prevented Plato from joining the fray at the start, but he exited pit lane with enough time to set five laps, and ultimately finished just 0.3 seconds adrift of the pace-setters.
Mike Bushell was classified fifth ahead of Matt Neal and the WSR BMW pairing of Colin Turkington and Andrew Jordan, both of whom are set for a strong weekend, if past results are anything to go by.
Aiden Moffat was the leading Mercedes A-Class in ninth with championship contender Adam Morgan behind for Ciceley Motorsport to round out the top ten.
The session passed with relatively little drama, though Matt Simpson did lock up and collide into the rear of Senna Proctor’s Vauxhall Astra at Tower in the opening laps.
Both escaped with relatively minor damage, though the #303 machine was forced to pit for a new bonnet.
The weekend continues with second practice at 12:00 BST.
