Volkswagen Motorsport has handed over the 100th Golf GTi touring car at the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, with Franz Engstler, who was also the first customer, receiving the latest model.
Engstler Motorsport were the first to run a Golf GTi TCR when the car made its racing début at the Red Bull Ring in 2015. Since then the car has proven to be one of the most popular TCR cars, with the 100th example being handed over in a special ceremony.
“The Golf GTI TCR tells a fantastic success story within the Volkswagen customer sport programme,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets. “Private customer teams successfully field the Golf GTI TCR in more than 15 different racing series all over the world.
“The Golf GTI TCR has already amassed twelve titles in international championships. To have now produced one hundred models in just two years is a great effort from our entire team.”
The Golf GTi TCR, which was announced as the TCR ‘Model of the Year’ in 2017, is available from €95,000. It will be prominently campaigned in the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) in 2018, where Rob Huff and Mehdi Bennani will be racing two examples for Sébastien Loeb Racing.
