Jack Goff was pleasantly surprised with taking pole position in qualifying for the British Touring Car Championship at Silverstone, with the Eurotech Racing driver falling foul to track limits on numerous occasions during the session.
“It’s a track we really weren’t expecting to be on pole at,” said Goff to TouringCars.Net. “We were aiming for the top seven or eight coming into this weekend; it’s a track that suits the longer cars.
“I think we are middle the road with the speed traps and to drag that out is testament to the Eurotech guys. It was lairy to drive but that’s how it’s got to be ’round here to make sure you’re quick enough to be near the front because it’s so, so close and competitive.”
Goff admits that keeping the car within the track limits proved to be a real challenge in the session, with the Honda driver losing his best lap at least twice, leaving him with a margin of a mere 0.001 seconds over Speedworks’ Tom Ingram in second.
“The problem was coming into turn three for the first time as it’s the first left hander, so the right rear tyres hardly does anything for the rest of the lap and it’s always a little on the edge through there. It was on its absolute limit – but it is good fun at the same time!
“I know my best time was disallowed for track limits so it ended pretty close with just 0.001 seconds to Tom – that’s about as close as you can get!
“We’ve done the first part of the job and now tomorrow we’ve got to make sure we can convert that into results.”
