After reclaiming the lead in this seasons title race, Sam Tordoff believes that both he and Team JCT600 with GardX are ‘one hundred percent’ in contention for their respective titles with nine races left to run this season.
Tordoff, who claimed another brace of podium finishes and a strong fifth place finish across the triple header at Knockhill last weekend, now leads three-time champion Matt Neal by nine points in the standings, with team-mate Rob Collard a further 23 markers behind after a weekend to forget.
The 27-year old has reached a new level of performance behind the wheel of the BMW 125i M-Sport this campaign, claiming silverware on 38 percent of his race starts and failing to finish a race just once, due to a mechanical failure from pole position on the restart during race three at Snetterton.
The former MG ace has also shown a new level of maturity to his racing this season, with consistent results giving him the advantage over Neal at this stage despite the latter having won three times as many races as Tordoff in his Honda Civic Type-R.
With the championship heading next to Rockingham, a circuit that saw Tordoff take pole position and a brace of podium finishes in 2014, there is still everything to play for in the title race.
Reflecting on his weekend’s work in Fife, Tordoff admitted he was elated with the performances, having earlier admitted to this reporter that he would be satisfied with ‘three top eights’ before racing had begun on Sunday.
“To score two second places and a fifth really represents a good weekend,” commented Tordoff.
“If you’d told me those would be my results before the weekend, I’d have happily taken them. It keeps us at the top of the teams’ championship and puts me back on top in the drivers’ standings by a bigger margin than at any other point in the season.”
Looking ahead to the remainder of the championship battle, which concludes at Brands Hatch over the first weekend of October, Tordoff believes both he, Team JCT600 with GardX and WSR are on course to repeat their sweeping championship successes of two seasons ago.
“There’s still a long way to go but the car is working so well, is reliable and carries ballast superbly, so we’re in this title fight one hundred per cent.”
