Monlau Motorsport’s Eric Gené has lost the podium he scored in the opening TCR Europe race at the Autódromo do Algarve, after he was penalised with ten seconds for contact with Felice Jelmini.
Unseen by the television cameras, Gené made contact with Jelmini’s Audi at Turn 4 on the opening lap of the race, sending the Italian through the gravel and ultimately out of the race.
The incident also ended the race of MM Motorsport’s Marco Butti, whilst Gené continued and battled with Jimmy Clairet for the race win, eventually finishing in second.
However, after the race Gené had ten seconds added to his race time for the incident, dropping him to fifth, promoting Jenson Brickley into second, Teddy Clairet into third and Nicolas Taylor up to fourth.
RC2 Racing’s Felipe Fernández also had a five-second penalty for contact with the rear of Max Hart’s Hyundai late in the race, demoting the Spaniard from 11th to 12th behind the Irishman.
