Tom Chilton doubles up in Silverstone practice

Tom Chilton kept EXCELR8 Motorsport on top of the times by going fastest in the second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Silverstone, just under two tenths of a second ahead of BMW’s Adam Morgan.

Under brighter skies at the Northamptonshire circuit, Chilton went two tenths quicker than earlier in the day, and below the qualifying lap record, to put in a time of 57.205 seconds.

Chilton went fastest just over five minutes into the session and held the top time for just under 15 minutes before BMW’s Morgan took over at the top.

Three minutes before the chequered flag flew, Chilton snatched back the top time, completing a perfect start to the weekend for the Hyundai racer.

Morgan was 0.186 seconds back, with team-mate Colin Turkington in third, a further half a tenth adrift.

Turkington, however, was one of seven drivers who received a black flag for exceeding track limits in the session, bringing the Northern Irishman’s session to an early finish four minutes before the end.

Power Maxed Racing’s Mikey Doble took fourth, pipping Speedworks Motorsport’s Josh Cook in the final minutes.

Andrew Watson was once again the leading factory-backed Toyota in sixth, ahead of EXCELR8’s Tom Ingram in seventh, the title challenger being just over four tenths off the pace of his team-mate.

Toyota’s Rob Huff was eighth, with the top ten being completed by EXCELR8’s Dan Zelos and Power Maxed Racing’s Árón Taylor-Smith, the latter duo having both been shown the black flag, with Taylor-Smith one of the first to see his session come to an early end.

Having been an impressive second in first practice, championship leader Jake Hill could only manage 11th this time around.

Once again none of the NAPA Racing UK Fords made it into the top ten; Ash Sutton was the best Focus racer in 12th, some six tenths off the pace.

Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 15:35 BST and will be streamed live via YouTube.
