Dan Cammish claims victory in eventful final race

Dan Cammish converted the reverse grid pole position into victory in the final British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Donington Park, as Tom Ingram carved through the field from the back of the grid to claim second.

After the top 11 were reversed from the race two result, Cammish was drawn to start on pole with NAPA Racing UK team-mate Sam Osborne alongside him.

Cammish led away from Osborne at the start, as behind them Árón Taylor-Smith got the better of Power Maxed Racing team-mate mikey Doble through the Craner Curves.

Further around the lap, EXCELR8 Motorsport’s Tom Chilton made contact with NAPA Racing’s Ash Sutton heading into the chicane, resulting in damage to Sutton’s right-rear wheel forcing him to pit.

By the end of the opening lap Ingram, who had started from the back following his race two overheating and subsequent engine change, was already up to 14th in a sign of the charge to come from the Hyundai racer.

Osborne only held second for one more lap, as through the Fogarty Esses on the second lap he caught a slide and Taylor-Smith took second.

That opened the door to numerous drivers, and by the end of the lap Doble and BMW’s Adam Morgan were also through into third and fourth.

There were also dramas for another title rival on the second lap, as BMW’s Colin Turkington was turned around by Toyota’s Rob Huff at the Melbourne hairpin, dropping the Northern Irishman to the back of the pack.

Meanwhile, at the front Cammish was pulling away from Taylor-Smith with a one-second advantage when on lap seven the safety car was called due to debris deposited on the circuit from a puncture for Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley.

By the time the safety car was called, Ingram had already picked off another eight cars to sit in sixth, including a crucial pass on title rival Jake Hill on lap four.

Only one lap was required behind the safety car, and on the restart lap Speedworks Motorsport’s Josh Cook made a superb dive inside Morgan for fourth, which also allowed Ingram to pass the BMW on the run up to McLeans.

Ingram then passed Cook for fourth at the end of the lap, and behind him NAPA’s Daniel Rowbottom followed through.

A second safety car period was then needed when Speeworks’ Aiden Moffat was turned into the gravel at the esses by Andrew Watson, his Toyota becoming beached and requiring recovery.

Light drizzle followed at the second restart, and Ingram only took two laps to get by Doble for third, quickly followed by passing Taylor-Smith for second two laps later.

However, by this time there was only a lap and a quarter left, and Ingram couldn’t close down the gap to Cammish, who scored his first victory of the season by just under two seconds.

Ingram was second after a stunning drive, including the fastest lap, with Taylor-Smith in third with his second podium of the season.

Cook came back to take fourth, benefitting from Doble’s defensive driving during Ingram’s earlier pass, with points leader Hill bringing his Laser Tools Racing BMW home in fifth.

Doble was thus sixth, ahead of the recovering Turkington, who had hauled himself back into tenth by the first safety car period on lap eight.

Morgan was eighth, with the top ten completed by Unlimited motorsport’s Daryl DeLeon, scoring a career-best result, and NAPA’s Osborne.

Although Sutton returned to the race, he was three laps down and scored no points.

Hill leads the championship with 316 points, ahead of Ingram (307), Sutton (296), Turkington (273), Cammish (270) and Cook (262).
