ALM Motorsport’s Levente Losonczy scored his maiden victory in TCR Europe in race two at Zolder, fighting back from losing the lead early on in the race.
At the start, reverse-grid pole-sitter Losonczy was beaten away from the line by the CUPRA of SP Compétition’s Giovanni Scamardi, who immediately set about chasing down front-row starter Felipe Fernández.
The Belgian then secured the lead from Fernández at the second chicane, and initially built up a small lead, as behind him Fernández settled into second.
Losonczy saw off an early challenge from Monlau Motorsport’s Franco Girolami through the opening corners, and got by Fernández at the second chicane as the latter went deep.
That caused Viktor Davidovski in the second Monlau CUPRA to get into the side of the Honda driver, putting both drivers momentarily on the grass and allowing Girolami into third.
The race stabilised for the next half dozen laps, but the lead which Scamardi had built up was gradually eroded by Losonczy.
Losonczy and Girolami got by Scamardi at the end of the sixth lap when the Belgian made a mistake at the final chicane, and Scamardi was then collected by Davidovski further around the lap at Turn 8, sending both into the gravel and out of the race.
A three lap safety car period was needed before racing resumed, with Losonczy leading Girolami.
However, as Girolami attempted to go around Losonczy for the lead at the first chicane, the Hungarian held station and Girolami was impeded, allowing ALM’s Ruben Volt to take advantage and sneak into second, with Felipe Fernández also in the mix.
Ultimately Losonczy prevailed to score a maiden victory, ahead of Volt and Girolami.
Felipe Fernández took the chequered flag in fourth, ahead of the charging CUPRA or Aurélien Comte in fifth and ALM’s Ignacio Montenegro in sixth.
Nicola Baldan struggled to follow Comte through the field in the latter stages and brought his Comtoyou Racing Audi home in seventh, ahead of the second GOAT Racing Honda of Rubén Fernández in eighth.
The top ten was completed by Viktor Andersson and Santiago Concepción.
