WSC Group, the global TCR rights holder, has announced significant changes to the system of Compensation Weights for the 2024 season and beyond.
The current system has been in place since the 2021 season, and works by taking into account the fastest lap set by a driver in qualifying, thereafter allocation weight in a range from 0 to 40 kg.
The new system starting in 2024 will be based on race results instead, taking into account the standardised total points scored by each driver in a racing weekend.
The weight will be applied based on points scored on a scale for the top five. The scale will be 1st – 40kg; 2nd – 30kg; 3rd – 30kg; 4th – 20kg; 5th – 10kg; from 6th onwards – 0kg.
If there are races to be considered with fewer than six cars, then compensation weight will only be applied for the first four drivers according to the scale of 1st – 40kg; 2nd – 30kg; 3rd – 20kg; 4th – 10kg.
As is standard, no compensation weight will be applied to the first event of the season.
Compensation weight should not be confused with the ‘Minimum Racing Weight’ for each car, which is calculated according to the TCR Balance of Performance [BoP] measures, continually assessed and revised via TCR Technical Bulletins.
“Following several analysis, and after listening to the advice of promoters and manufacturers, we came to the decision that a change was needed,” explained WSC President Marcello Lotti.
“We believe that the new system, based on the actual results of a whole racing weekend, is more straightforward, makes it more difficult to create any kind of strategies and it’s easier to be understood.”
