The last race victory of the 2023 TCR UK season fell to Jac Constable after continued pressure from Jenson Brickley who pushed him all around the Brands Hatch Indy track.
This all happened following the restart as the original attempt of the race resulted in multiple collisions exiting druids as Carl Boardley and Oliver Cottam made contact. With Cottam spinning in the middle of the track in front of the entire field, the inevitable happened with Scott Sumpton collecting Cottam and Matthew Wilson also suffering damage.
It was difficult to apportion blame with Cottam saying ” I just got turned and then collected while I was spinning and that was that.”
Boardley acknowledged that he ended up pushing Cottam round but was adamant that he didn’t start the incident.
“I gave Ollie loads of room but then someone absolutely drilled the right-hand side of me,” explained Boardley. “Then all of a sudden Ollie was across the front of me.”
Following the second start, Constable had his work cut out as he was suffering from mid-corner understeer which was exposing him to the close attentions of Brickley. However, the Audi’s superior straight-line speed shone through and prevented Brickley’s ballast-laden Cupra Leon from making a move.
“It was tricky from start to finish,” said Constable. “We knew we didn’t have the car for this track but to be fair we did a decent job with what we had and we came away with a win so it couldn’t be much better than that.”
Second place was not all doom and gloom for Brickley however as it meant that he managed to secure second place in the drivers’ standings.
“It was a good race,” said Brickley. “We were the only car with max ballast. We suffered with that throughout especially towards the end when everything was getting hot and we were struggling to get the power down out the corners.
“We just couldn’t catch Jac in that one but we’re happy with second place in the championship.”
Alex Ley was just out of reach to improve on his third position however the Hyundai racer was pleased to have another good start after the race restart.
“I was annoyed as when the first red flag came out because I had got up to fifth but luckily [after the restart] I managed to do it again,” said Ley.
“Third in the end and we really couldn’t have done much more.”
Fourth fell to Callum Newsham whose performance included a brave move around the outside of 2023 champion Boardley into Druids as Boardley was stuck behind Bruce Winfield’s Area Motorsport Hyundai. Boardley finished fifth after Winfield was penalised for track limits twice, demoting him to ninth.
With Andy Wilmot sixth, seventh was a very battle-scarred Brad Hutchison. Valiantly trying to hang on in his Gen 1 Audi RS3 LMS after starting from pole position, it was clear that the pace was not there as Hutchison fell down the field following the pitting of the safety car.
Luke Sargent finished eighth taking advantage of Winfield’s penalty and Rick Kerry completed the last point scorers of the 2023 TCR UK season.
