A bitterly disappointed Colin Turkington left Knockhill feeling like he had endured a ‘bad dream’ in the British Touring Car Championship, after his worst weekend in two years in the series.
Having qualified in eighth on Saturday, Turkington knew that it had been a ‘difficult’ day, admitting that he had not been comfortable with the balance of his BMW in the wet conditions.
Race one on Sunday started in the dry, but heavy rain soon feel part-way through the race, whilst the Northern Irishman was running in eighth.
After pitting for wet tyres, double-stacked behind his team-mate, Turkington fell out of the points and lost a handful of places, as well as going a lap down, before fighting back to 13th by the chequered flag, which later became 11th when two rivals were excluded.
Struggling to make inroads in race two, Turkington and Dan Cammish collided late in the race, resulting in a first non-finish of the season.
From near the back of the grid for the finale, and in extremely wet conditions, Turkington gained eight places, but missed out on the points in a race where he made it to the chequered flag for the first time in two years.
“I can’t even begin to express how disappointed I am from race day, and it feels like a bad dream,” said Turkington, who took just five points away from the weekend and now sits 81 points adrift of points leader Ash Sutton.
“Qualifying was tricky but we had great potential from our fourth row start for race one. Unfortunately, from the pitstop for wets, my day soon evolved into a nightmare as I exited the pits over a lap behind the pack.
“I was hopeful we could carve our way back through the field throughout the day and recover, points-wise, but contact by others soon ended my chances of turning things around.
“Knockhill delivered a blockbuster of entertainment with unpredictable weather and drama, but unfortunately it wasn’t any fun from my seat.
“Taking a blow like this is never easy, but we’ll regroup and ensure we come back fighting at Donington.”
