Excelr8 Motorsport’s Chris Smiley was the quickest driver in the second British Touring Car Championship free practice session at Knockhill, beating BTC Racing’s Josh Cook by over a tenth of a second.
Smiley had earlier been second fastest in a wet first practice, and the Northern Irishman went one better in dry conditions in second practice as he put his Hyundai at the top of the timesheets with a lap of 51.110 seconds.
Honda cars were second and third fastest, as Cook edged out BTC team-mate Senna Proctor by just 0.015 seconds, Proctor having been quickest of all for much of the session until first Cook and then Smiley usurped him in the closing minutes.
Local racer Rory Butcher was fourth fastest in his Toyota, the Scot having made up for lost ground in first practice when he had a minor technical issue.
Colin Turkington was the fastest Team BMW driver in fifth, two and a half seconds off the pace as the top rear-wheel drive runner.
Jack Goff put his Team HARD CUPRA in sixth, ahead of Stephen Jelley’s Team BMW car in seventh.
Power Maxed Racing’s Jason Plato made his first top ten entry of the weekend in eighth, whilst the top ten was completed by MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill and Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat.
Championship leader Ash Sutton was just outside the top ten in 11th, four tenths off the pace. His nearest rival in the standings, Tom Ingram, was just 16th, six tenths off the quickest lap.
The session was again interrupted by a brief red flag, when BTC Racing’s Jade Edwards, who had caused the stoppage in first practice, went off 24 minutes into the session when she spun at Duffus down the hill towards Leslie’s corner.
Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 14:50 BST.
