After a long five-year wait, Zengő Motorsport returned to the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) winners’ circle this afternoon, with Mikel Azcona taking victory in the second race at Motorland Aragón.
The team’s jubilation was more than evident in the pit-lane after the race, with their celebrations far exceeding the enthusiasm and volume of the series’ more regular race winners.
It’s been a tough year for the Hungarian outfit, who have had to learn an entirely new car without any pre-season testing. However, all that hard work is now starting to pay off.
Their improvement over the course of this season’s congested calendar has been a great achievement, with the new-for-2020 CUPRA now looking like a formidable weapon on the world stage.
Azcona himself was delighted to take his first victory of the year, particularly given that the race was held on his home turf in Spain.
“It’s unbelievable, I cannot describe this feeling, it’s amazing just to win my home race,” he said.
“It was a good victory, good start from the beginning. Like I said before the race, the start of the new CUPRA is amazing. It’s very easy to do faster starts. So yes, it was a comfortable race for me, but amazing.
“We really deserved that because it’s been a hard year for us, for Zengő Motorsport and for Group CUPRA.
“We improved really a lot since the first weekend where we were the last three cars, and now, victory with the best car.
“It’s an amazing feeling. Thank you to the Zengő Motorsport guys, and also to CUPRA, because now I think we have the car to battle for more victories, so stay tuned!”
