Mikel Azcona will start on pole position for the reversed-grid second race of the weekend at Motorland Aragón, following much confusion during qualifying at the penultimate round of the 2020 World Touring Car Cup (WTCR).
After a flurry of lap cancellations and reinstatements during Q2, the standing order now looks very different.
Mikel Azcona has finally been confirmed as the tenth-fastest driver from the second phase of qualifying, and as such, will benefit from reversed-grid pole at his home race.
The Spaniard will be joined on the front row of the grid by Luca Engstler, who was reinstated to ninth, while Norbert Michelisz and Bence Boldizs – who had both been provisionally announced as the reversed-grid pole-sitter for race two at various times throughout the day – have been reinstated to fourth and twelfth respectively.
Frustratingly for Michelisz, his lap time should have been enough to see him through into the Q3 shoot-out had it been deemed legal at the time. As such, the Hungarian will start race three from sixth position on the grid, behind the five drivers who did indeed take part in Q3.
