Jean-Karl Vernay had been set to line up from pole position in the third race of the weekend at Motorland Aragón, but that has been taken away after the Frenchman was judged to have driven beyond track limits in the Q3 shoot-out.
Vernay, who hasn’t scored a pole position in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) since 2018, was deemed to have put all four wheels of his Team Mulsanne Alfa Romeo beyond the white line at turn five.
As a result of his lap time cancellation, Gilles Magnus will now start the final race of the weekend from pole, with Thed Björk alongside him on the front row of the grid.
Vernay meanwhile will have to settle for fourth ahead of Nathanaël Berthon, who was unable to set a lap time due to a mechanical failure.
On top of his grid demotion, Vernay has also been deducted the points he accumulated for scoring pole position in qualifying, dropping him from third back down to fourth in the standings.
Nevertheless, Vernay’s starting positions for each of the three races tomorrow are still far better than those of Yann Ehrlacher and Esteban Guerrieri, so a late championship bid for the Frenchman may well remain on the cards.
