Mikel Azcona claims remarkable Spa double win

Mikel Azcona repeated his performance of yesterday and took another incredible victory in the second TCR Europe race at a wet Spa.

Azcona, as like in race one, started the race outside of the top 12 but made another impressive drive through the field and had the lead of the race by lap seven after getting the better of Pepe Oriola at Malmedy.

Also in similar fashion to Saturday’s opening race of the weekend, Tom Coronel took second place behind the 2018 TCR Europe champion.

The Dutchman had a battle late in the race with John Filippi and finally got the better of the Hyundai driver on the final lap in similar weather conditions to yesterday’s race.

A dramatic race saw the safety car called on lap three after Dan Lloyd and Jose Manuel Sapag made contact firstly at Campus, before Lloyd again tried a move up the inside of the Argentian at Stavelot.

Neither driver yielded their position and after the two cars collided, both went off into the gravel and hit the tyre wall putting both drivers out of the race.

His Brutal Fish Racing teammate Oriola had led the early stages of the race, after getting the better of Mat’o Homola at La Source on the opening lap, but gradually fell back through the pack in the later stages and ended the race 12th.

Championship leader Mike Halder also had a disappointing end to race two of the weekend. After at one point behind Oriola in second, the German driver was another man to fall back through the field and he could only salvage tenth place.

He does however still lead the championship with just two races remaining this season.

One of the drivers to benefit from people struggling ahead was Teddy Clairet. He ended race two in Belgium fourth ahead of Nicolas Baert, who was the highest placed championship contender.

The Belgian had started the race in 16th with a three place grid penalty following contact with Jessica Bäckman in race one, but a fine performance on Saturday saw him take fifth.

Daniel Nagy was sixth in race two, but he was extremely lucky to get away with no damage after colliding with Andreas Bäckman at Eau Rouge on the opening lap.

The afore mentioned Swede finished behind him in seventh despite spinning after the contact on lap one and Nicola Baldan took eighth in the new CUPRA Leon Competición.

Evgenii Leonov and Mike Halder completed the top 10 in race two ahead of title hopeful Mehdi Bennani in the ComToYou Racing Audi.

The final two rounds of the 2020 TCR Europe championship are set to take place at Jarama in Spain between November 6-8.
