Gabriele Tarquini led team-mate Norbert Michelisz home for a BRC Hyundai 1-2 in the final FIA World Touring Car Cup race of the day at the Hungaroring, as early leader Esteban Guerrieri retired with mechanical failure.
Michelisz started his home race from pole position, but Guerrieri got off to a stronger start in his Honda and passed the Hungarian into the first corner.
Tarquini then went around the outside of his team-mate at Turn 2, leaving Michelisz behind the reigning champion.
Guerrieri comfortably led for the first three laps but approaching the chicane on lap four the Argentine lost power briefly in his car and allowed both Tarquini and Michelisz through into the lead.
Things then went from bad to worse for the erstwhile points leader when he crashed into the barriers at the final corner on lap 11 after seemingly suffering from a steering failure, prompting a three-lap safety car period.
A final safety car phase then came for the last two laps when the Alfa Romeo of Kevin Ceccon stopped at Turn 9 with a broken front-left wheel, with the race finishing behind the safety car.
Cyan Racing’s Yann Ehrlacher completed the podium as the best of the Lynk & Co drivers, having briefly challenged for the lead at the start, before dropping back from the Hyundais ahead.
PWR Racing’s Mikel Azcona was fourth, having together with Cyan Racing’s Thed Björk moved ahead of the Honda of Néstor Girolami on the opening lap.
After retiring from race two, Björk took valuable points home with fifth, remining in the top three in the drivers’ standings, ahead of Girolami in sixth as the sole finisher for Münnich Motorsport.
Rob Huff was the best SLR Volkswagen driver for the second race in a row with seventh, ahead of BRC’s Augusto Farfus in eighth.
Completing the top ten in a much more sedate third race of the weekend were BRC’s Nicky Catsburg and Leopard Racing’s Jean-Karl Vernay.
Comtoyou Racing CUPRA driver Aurélien Panis was 11th, ahead of his Audi team-mate Frédéric Vervisch in 12th and CUPRA team-mate Tom Coronel in 13th.
KCMG’s Attila Tassi was 14th, despite the Honda driver applying much late-race pressure to Coronel ahead, with SLR VW driver Mehdi Bennani getting the final point in 15th in his repair Golf GTi.
Yvan Muller failed to finish the race after making early contact with Cyan Racing team-mate Andy Priaulx on the opening lap, also getting the Lynk & Co driver a drive-through penalty before he called it quits.
Girolami leads compatriot Guerrieri in the standings with 100 points to his team-mate’s 90, whilst Björk is on 81 points, just two ahead of Tarquini after the latter’s second win of the season.
