WestCoast Racing’s Dan Lloyd continued his winning run in the TCR UK series in the first race at Knockhill, dominating the race from pole position as Ollie Taylor and Josh Price completed the podium after an exciting scrap.
At the start Lloyd leapt into the lead, whilst Taylor managed to get the jump on Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat to move into second position.
However sustained pressure from Moffat and a slippery circuit caught out Taylor on lap six and he slid through the gravel at Butcher’s corner, handing the Scot second on the road behind Lloyd, who was storming off into the distance.
Moffat then set about closing the gap to Lloyd, posting the fastest lap of the race before going over the limit on the following lap, losing further ground to the leading Volkswagen.
Further back, the second WestCoast Racing Volkswagen of Andreas Bäckman moved into second on lap 15 when Taylor threw his Civic off the circuit, re-joining in third with mud all over the tyres on his Civic.
Disaster struck for Moffat at the half-way stage on lap 16 when his Alfa Romeo stopped on track with driveshaft issues, at the same time that Lewis Kent went off into the tyre barriers at Scotsman bend which brought out the safety car for three laps.
When the race resumed, Lloyd set about re-building his lead, whilst behind the scrap for the final podium positions continued. Andreas Bäckman outbraked himself into Turn 1 at the restart, handing second to Taylor.
Two laps later Bäckman made contact with Taylor at Turn 1, allowing Team BMR’s Price into third and on the following lap into second past Taylor.
The scrap for the final podium places continued until almost the end of the race, before Taylor re-passed Price with just a handful of laps left.
Second is Taylor’s best result in TCR, whilst third for Price was a just reward for the team’s efforts to change his engine on Saturday.
Andreas Bäckman ultimately had to settle for fourth after his mistake, ahead of Sean Walkinshaw in fifth, who had a comparatively clean race compared to his competitors.
Derek Palmer upheld Laser Tools Racing’s honour in sixth with his first top ten of the season, ahead of the third WestCoast Racing car of Jessica Bäckman in seventh, who had an eventful run which saw her lose the rear bumper of her car early on.
Finlay Crocker, in the new-specification Honda Civic, failed to finish after contact with DW Racing’s Darelle Wilson on the last lap of the race. Crocker had been running a lap down at the time as a result of several spins throughout the race.
Lloyd’s win now means the Yorkshireman has a 28-point advantage over Taylor in the series standings, with Andreas Bäckman just four points further back in third.
The second TCR UK race takes place at 14:25 BST.
