With the British Touring Car Championship returning to action this weekend at the Snetterton 300 circuit, current championship leader Gordon Shedden is hopeful of consistent point scores, even with his Honda Civic carrying maximum success ballast.
“I’m certainly going to Snetterton in a much better position than I did last year, when I was a long way behind in the standings,” said the Halfords Yuasa Racing driver, who is leading the standings by 11 points from West Surrey Racing’s Rob Collard.
The Scot admits that it will be a tough battle for both himself and team mate Matt Neal to be competitive over the next couple of race weekends, but the main focus is concentrating his efforts towards the team’s success for the remainder of the year.
“As I always say, I’ll take the points in the bag any day. But the Civic Type R was quick there last year and Matt reported positive feedback from the tyre test earlier this month too, which is encouraging.”
As the complete grid has been running with the new RML-specification parts from the beginning of this season, it has shown that some drivers including Colin Turkington, Ashley Sutton and Tom Ingram are within striking distance of the 38-year-old, with the top ten separated by 87 points with 15 races remaining.
“The BTCC is so unpredictable and there are a lot of fast cars out there, and we all know how quickly things can change in this championship,” explained Shedden.
“We just need to focus on our own job and make the best of every single opportunity – anything else, we can’t worry about.”
