Mat Jackson was fastest once more in the second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Silverstone, ahead of Jack Goff and Colin Turkington.
The Motorbase man’s effort of 58.557s, the fastest lap of the weekend so far, was just enough of a cushion for the fastest time despite a late improvement from Goff – although Jackson had been on course for a faster time on his final lap before diving into the pit lane.
Jackson had earlier topped the day’s first practice session in his Ford Focus, and set his best time in the middle part of the second 40-minute session.
There were plenty of improvements from those behind but few ate into Jackson’s advantage, until Goff’s effort within a minute of the end improved him to within a tenth of the Ford.
Josh Cook continued his form from first practice with the fourth best time in Chevrolet Cruze, ahead of Tom Ingram. Aron Smith was again the early leader but fell back to sixth, while championship leader Gordon Shedden was seventh.
His closest rival Jason Plato was eleventh in his Volkswagen CC, but only attempted one qualifying run.
Qualifying for Round 25 of the season gets underway at 15:45 BST.
