Warren Scott chasing works backing for Team BMR

Team BMR boss Warren Scott says he is chasing manufacturer support for his championship-leading British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) team, after the squad took another two victories at Snetterton.

Scott’s team has been the talk of the BTCC paddock this season, having signed both Colin Turkington and Jason Plato, the top two drivers in the 2014 championship, for the current season. Since then the team have gone from strength to strength, as Plato leads Turkington in the standings after Snetterton.

The team took their first 1-2-3 finish at the Norfolk circuit on Sunday, marking another milestone in the team’s relatively short history.

“I’m so pleased with how the team is doing,” Scott told TouringCars.Net. “We had a 1-2-3 in qualifying and a 1-2-3 in the race, so we couldn’t ask for better. The way the rules work it’s very unlikely you’re going to get that again.”

Having taken seven wins already this season with his star driver pairing, Scott says he is now eyeing up works support from a manufacturer, although no deal is yet on the horizon.

“I was looking for it [manufacturer backing] from the beginning of the year,” added Scott. “It’s not the easiest thing in the world to do. Hopefully our results show that we warrant a manufacturer and we want to push for that.

“There’s others that we’ve been speaking to, although we love the Volkswagen – it’s a great car. We’ve not taken the focus off the Volkswagens, we’re still improving them and we’ll keep improving them until I’ve actually signed a deal with another company, or even Volkswagen, because you never know.

“We have to keep moving forward otherwise we end up going backwards. We won’t stop doing that until we get another car.”

Plato also echoed Scott’s comments, having signed for the team as part of a three-year deal. The former champion has previously raced for an independent team before gaining works backing when he signed for RML in 2009 and gained Chevrolet backing in 2010 and 2011.

“I have a three-year deal here,” said Plato to TouringCars.Net. “I’ll be here next year and I believe Colin will as well. We’re speaking with manufacturers and we want a works’ deal.

“What we’ve proven so far is that we can do the job. It’s not rocket science, it’s common sense and listening to the people that know what they’re talking about. The engineers, me, Colin – we know how things need to be.

“It’s nice to be involved. I like to be involved from day one – that’s probably where I’m at my best, if I have an input. You get all your ingredients and you make a cake.

“In me and Colin you’ve got two benchmark drivers. I’ve got more experience in front-wheel drive. Then you’ve got Árón, who wants to have a go and wants to get stuck in, and there’s this great big pool of information sharing going on. It’s a great team – it’s really good. We’re firmly set up and we want to get a manufacturer deal.

“We’re ahead of schedule.”
