Mikey Doble tops second practice with late lap

Power Maxed Racing’s Mikey Doble topped the second British Touring Car Championship practice session of the day at Donington Park, thanks to a late effort in the closing seconds.

Prior to Doble’s session topping lap, it had once again been about the NAPA Racing UK cars at the top of the times, with Daniel Rowbottom first out of the box to put in a quick lap, followed by Dan Cammish five laps later.

Rowbottom then went quickest a time of 1 minute 42.849 seconds, slower than in the damp earlier session, and held on to the top time for over 20 minutes.

In the end though it was Doble who put in a rapid late lap, putting his Vauxhall on top of the times by just 0.006 seconds.

Rowbottom was second, ahead of team-mates Cammish and Ash Sutton in third and fourth respectively.

Toyota’s Andrew Watson was fifth as the best of the Speedworks Motorsport-run quartet, ahead of the leading BMW of Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill in sixth, who was the only other driver within a second of the pace in another spread out session.

The second Power Maxed Vauxhall of Árón Taylor-Smith was seventh, ahead of a strong effort by the leading CUPRA of Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley in eighth.

The top ten was completed by Speedworks’ Aiden Moffat and BMW’s Adam Morgan, the latter 1.547 seconds off the pace.

Championship leader Tom Ingram, who had been third fastest in first practice, was just 11th this time around, the EXCELR8 Motorsport driver being 1.6 seconds slower than Doble.

Toyota’s Rob Huff failed to take part in the session due to the team electing to change the steering rack on his Corolla, whilst EXCELR8’s Tom Chilton also failed to post a meaningful lap, despite circulating nine times.

Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:05 BST and will be streamed live on YouTube.
