Dan Cammish heads NAPA 1-2 in wet Donington practice

DAN Cammish led NAPA Racing UK team-mate Daniel Rowbottom in a wet opening British Touring Car Championship practice session at Donington Park.

NAPA were at the top of the timesheets throughout the 35-minute session, with Rowbottom and Cammish trading top times early on, before team-mate Ash Sutton briefly appeared at the top of the timesheets after 15 minutes.

However, Cammish went quickest of all five minutes later, lapping the Grand Prix circuit in 1 minute 41.679 seconds, just under a tenth of a second ahead of Rowbottom.

Championship leader Tom Ingram was third fastest in the leading EXCELR8 Motorsport Hyundai, having been there much of the session, the 2022 champion improving to a time which was just over half a second off Cammish within the final ten minutes.

Sutton ended up in fourth, seven tenths off his team-mates, ahead of Power Maxed Racing’s Árón Taylor-Smith in fifth, the Irishman completing the joint fewest number of laps in the session due to multiple trips to the pitlane.

Josh Cook was the best of the Toyota quartet in sixth, just over a second off the pace, ahead of EXCELR8’s Tom Chilton in seventh.

Toyota’s Andrew Watson was eighth, with the top ten completed by Power Maxed’s Mikey Doble and BMW’s Colin Turkington.

The session was red-flagged for around four minutes not long after it had got underway, when Toyota’s Rob Huff went off at the Old Hairpin. The Speedworks driver ended up down in 16th, almost two seconds off the pace.

Rookie Dan Zelos was 18th fastest on his first outing in the BTCC, lapping in 1:44.211, some 2.5 seconds off the pace in tricky conditions to acclimatise with his new machinery.

Second practice gets underway at 12:15 BST followed by qualifying at 15:05 BST.
