Cook sets the benchmark time in Croft final practice

Josh Cook set the benchmark time in the second and final British Touring Car Championship practice session at Croft.

A month on from claiming his first win in the BTCC for two years, Cook set the quickest time of the weekend so far in FP2, with his effort of 1m21.784 enough to take top spot in his Speedworks-run Toyota Corolla, ahead of the EXCELR8 Hyundais of Tom Chilton and Tom Ingram.

Chris Smiley’s CUPRA enjoyed a strong run to the fourth-fastest time, with the NAPA Racing UK Ford of Dan Rowbottom completing the top five.

Croft has been long regarded as a strong track for the rear-wheel drive BMW cars, and they enjoyed another solid run, with Colin Turkington, Adam Morgan and current points leader Jake Hill sixth, seventh and ninth, Rob Huff’s Toyota the only car to split the trio on the timesheets.

Behind, Andrew Watson also cemented the Toyota’s reputation as ‘one to watch’ this weekend, joining Cook and Huff to make it three cars inside the top ten.

Ash Sutton’s Ford was next, albeit in a dead heat for lap time with the Power Maxed Racing-run Vauxhall Astra of Aron Taylor-Smith, the Irishman quickest amongst the Independent runners.

Taylor-Smith’s Vauxhall team-mate Mikey Doble was 13th fastest, the top 15 runners completed by Ronan Pearson’s Hyundai and Cook’s team-mate, Aiden Moffat.

After another incident-free practice session, the stakes will be raised later this afternoon, with the all-important qualifying session to follow at 15:00 (BST).
