For the first time in 2024, a different driver to race one won the second race of a British Touring Car Championship event, as EXCELR8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram took the race two spoils at Thruxton.
Race one winner Jake Hill made a good start in the Laser Tools Racing BMW, as NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton took second from team-mate Dan Cammish into the Complex for the first time.
At the end of the lap, Ingram then dived inside Cammish for third at the chicane, although the Hyundai driver had to cut the chicane in the process, with Cammish dropping to fifth.
Ingram never gave the position back as he sought to close down the leading duo of Hill and Sutton, with the move looked at by race officials following the race.
UPDATE – Ingram was handed a two-place penalty following the race for gaining an unfair advantage, dropping him to third and giving Hill a double win.
By lap eight, Ingram was all over the back of Hill’s BMW and the 2022 champion used his hybrid boost on the exit of Church corner to power past Hill for the lead.
Ingram then put clear air between himself and Hill, taking the chequered flag in first, with Hill finishing 2.6 seconds back in second.
Cammish completed the podium in third, after taking fourth back from Speedworks Motorsport’s Josh Cook into the complex on the second lap and then passing team-mate Ash Sutton five laps later approaching the chicane. After Ingram’s penalty, that gave Cammish another second-place result.
Sutton had suffered from a damaged front splitter in the race, clearly hobbling his straight-line speed and meaning he was also passed by team-mate Daniel Rowbottom three laps from the finish.
Sutton nonetheless held on to fifth, ahead of Cook in sixth, who was once again the leading Toyota driver.
Team BMW duo Colin Turkington and Adam Morgan were seventh and eighth respectively, and with Ingram randomly selecting the top eight to be reversed for the final race, it gives Morgan pole position with Turkington alongside.
Power Maxed Racing’s Árón Taylor-Smith and Toyota’s Rob Huff completed the top ten, the latter having taken the position from EXCLER8’s Tom Chilton on the penultimate lap.
The only retirement of the race was the Toyota of Andrew Watson, who went off at Turn 1 on the second lap.
Race three is scheduled to get underway at 17:20 BST.
