Colin Turkington doubles up with dominant race two drive

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington won again in the second British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Brands Hatch, as a dicing Tom Ingram and Ash Sutton completed the podium.

Turkington made another strong start to hold his lead away from the line, as stable-mate Jake Hill initially slotted into second from fourth on the grid.

Laser Tools Racing’s Hill held second for the first half dozen laps, but as Turkington quickly established a near four-second lead, his WSR colleague became a cork in the bottle.

On lap seven, Hill lost three places as NAPA Racing UK’s Sutton dived inside at Druids and Speedworks Motorsport’s Josh Cook took advantage to follow by into Surtees, collecting a radiator full of grass in the process.

EXCELR8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram then capitalised on out-of-position Hill to seize sixth inside Clark Curve, leaving Hill circulating in fifth.

A lap later, Hill lost another three places to drop to eighth, followed by another two places on the next tour.

Hill’s race came to a premature conclusion on lap 15 when he went straight on at Druids, suffering from apparent steering failure which left him completely unable to turn.

With Hill’s BMW stuck in the gravel, a three lap safety car period was required. After the race resumed, Turkington soon opened a gap of over a second over the chasing Sutton, who by now was under pressure from Ingram.

Ingram had made a place at the start from his seventh-place grid position when team-mate Tom Chilton was slow away from the line, and then passed NAPA’s Daniel Rowbottom exiting Clark Curve on lap three for fifth.

He then dived inside Cook’s Toyota for fourth on lap 13 into Paddock, although there was slight contact with the Corolla racer in the process, resulting in a flapping rear bumper for Cook.

That became third with Hill’s demise, and when the race restarted Ingram made a late lunge on Sutton for second, three laps from the finish.

Despite Sutton trying to fight back, Ingram prevailed in a close tussle between the recent champions, leaving the Ford Focus racer to settle for third.

BMW’s Adam Morgan was fourth, coming through from 15th on the grid and benefitting from using the soft tyre in the race.

Rowbottom was fifth, ahead of Chilton in sixth, whilst seventh-placed Dan Cammish came through from 18th on the grid in an impressive drive on the medium-compound tyre.

Speedworks’ Aiden Moffat was eighth, with the top ten completed by Power Maxed Racing duo Mikey Taylor and Árón Taylor-Smith.

Two of Speedworks’ four cars suffered from contact in the race. Rob Huff in the factory-backed Corolla had worked his way up to eighth, but received a black-and-orange flag for damage to his rear bumper, forcing him to pit, where he retired.

Likewise, Cook received contact from Ingram which damaged his bumper, and he too was forced to pit when running in fourth, dropping him to 16th.

Race three is scheduled to get underway at 17:15 BST.
